Ophthalmoxerosis, also called dry eye disease, is one of the most common ocular problems. The incidence rate is about 10% to 30%. As the popularity of computer and air conditioner, wearing of contact lens, expanding of refractive surgery, and environment pollution, ophthalmoxerosis increases approximately 10% each year; and patients tend to be younger. If therapy is delayed, ophthalmoxerosis will cause corneal scar and clouding that can lead to blindness. People are much more required to take care of their eyes. And the research and development of new medicines to prevent and treat ophthalmoxerosis becomes much more important.Trehalose, a disaccharide with stable chemical structure, has no any toxicity. It has been found that trehalose can protect corneal epithelial cells in culture from death by desiccation. And trehalose has a protective effect on cornea, especially corneal endothelial and epithelial cells. Trehalose can be used as a new potential eye medicine for ophthalmoxerosis. Up to now, trehalose used as medicine is not found in national and international market yet.Sodium hyaluronate (SH) is a mucopolysaccharide, which is widely present in the animal intercellular matrix. It is generally acknowledged as the best ophthalmic vehicles that can improve the bioavailability of drugs, decrease the stimulation caused by drugs and the adverse reaction caused by preservatives in eye drops, facilitate the corneal epithelial wound healing, and relieve ocular disorder. It has satisfied clinical results for the treatment of ophthalmoxerosis, especially for ophthalmoxerosis with corneal epithelial damage. This paper focused on the research and development of trehalose and its eye drops compounded with SH that might be more effective in the treatment of...
