Objective: Bilirubin is an antioxidant that suppresses lipid oxidation and retards atherosclerosis formation. An inverse association between serum bilirubin and coronary heart disease has been reported. Coronary artery disease in young differs from the disease in older patients in many aspects. The aim of the study is to explore the relationship of blood serum bilirubin level with coronary artery disease in young and serum lipid. The new targets may be useful to evaluate the state of coronary artery disease in young. It may be useful to provide a new way to treat the patients with coronary artery disease in young. Methods: We selected 68 patients with coronary heart disease who were 33 to 45 years old as the coronary heart disease in young group, and 67 healthy people who were 30 to 45 years old as the control group. Then comparison was done between the two groups of the level of serum total bilirubin(TBIL), direct bilirubin(DBIL), indirect bilirubin(IBIL) and serum lipid. Line correlation analysis was also don between serum bilirubin and serum lipid. Results The level of serum TBIL ,IBIL ,DBIL and high density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C) of the coronary heart disease in young group is much lower than that of the control group(P <0. 01, respectively). The level of serum total cholesterol(CHO), triglycerides( TG)and low density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C) of the coronary heart disease in young group is much high than that of the control group(P<0.05 and P<0. 01 and P<0. 01, respectively). Line correlation analysis between serum bilirubin and serum lipid showed that serum bilirubin and CHO, TG, LDL-C had remarkable inverse correlation and it also showed there was a significant and positive correlation between serum bilirubin and HDL-C.Conclusion The blood serum bilirubin level and coronary heart disease in young have remarkable negative correlation, and the blood serum bilirubin level of patients with coronary heart disease in young is lower than that of healthy people , serum bilirubin may be a new risk factor of coronary heart disease in young. Bilirubin affects the metabolism of serum lipids. The new targets may be useful to evaluate the states of coronary artery disease in young. It may be useful to provide a new way to treat the patients with coronary artery disease in young.
