The constituents of Artemisia sphaerocephala Kraschen and their bio-activity are reviewed briefly covering the literatures since 2000.Isolation on the ethanol extract of the whole plant of Artemisia sphaerocephala Kraschen (compositae) yielded five new compounds and twenty-three known compounds. The structures were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic methods. The new compounds include 5,7,2′,4′-tetrahydroxy-5′-methoxyflavone; 5,7-dihy- droxy-4′-methoxyflavone-6,8-di-C-β-glucopyranoside; 4-(1-hydroxylethyl)-phenol-1- O-β-D-glucopyranoside; 4-O-acetophenone-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1-3)-β-D-glucopyr- anoside; (3β,16β,21β)-16,21,28-trihydroxyolean-12-en-3-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1-2)-β-D-glucuronopyranoside.The known compounds include cis-dehydromatricaria ester; capillarin; 5-hydroxy -7,4′-dimethoxyflavanone;β-sitosterol; 5-hydroxy-7,4′dimethoxyflavone; 5-hydroxy- 7,4′-dimethoxyflavanonol; 5,3′-dihydroxy-7,4′-dimethoxyflavone; 5,3′-dihydroxy-7, 4′-dimethoxyflavanone; 5,7-dihydroxy-6,4′-dimethoxyflavanone; daucosterol; isosak- uranetin; hesperetin; 5,3′,4′-trihydroxy-7-methoxyflavanone; navingenin; eriodictyol; acacetin; chrysoeroil; 5,2′,4′-trihydroxy- 6,7,5′-trimethoxyflavone; 5,7,2′,4′-tetrahyd- roxy-6,5′-dimethoxyflavone; isosakuranetin-7-O-rutinoside; acacetin-7-O-rutinoside; picein; (3β,16β)-16,28-dihydroxyolean-12-en-3-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl(1-2)-β-D-gluc- uronopyranoside. All compounds were isolated from this plant for the first time.Their free radical scavenging ability of several of these flavoniods was investigated by free radical 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay. The detecting approach existed was improved.
