Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the serum levels of carbohydrateantigen 125(CA125)in patients with congestive heart failure (CHF). Methods: Onehundred and twenty two patients were divided into three groups based on standard NewYork Heart Association classfication. The patients were subdivided into PF(pleural fluidor pericardial effusion) group and non-PF group based on the presence of pleural fluid orpericardial effusion, thirty nine healthy examiner without heart failure were recruited ascontrol group. The serum levels of 12 common tumor markers, including CA125, CA199,NSE, CEA, CA242, CA153, AFP, Ferritin, free-PSA, PSA, 13-HCG and HCG weredetected by C-12 Protein chip assay System, and ejection fraction(EF) and pleuralfluid and pericardial effusion were detected by Doppler echocardiography. Results: Thelevel of CA125 in the patients with heart failure and pleural fluid or pericardial effusionwas much higher than that without heart failure or pleural fluid or pericardial effusion, and there was obvious relevance between CA125 level and EF. The levels showeddifference between patients with valve disease, dilated cardiomyopathy, comary heartdisease or hypertensive heart disease. Conclusion: (1) The level of CA125 in patientswith heart failure was higher than that without heart failure and it was negativelycorrelated with the level of EF. It was not influenced by the reasons causing heart failure.(2)The level of CA125 in the patients with pleural fluid and pericardial effusionwas higher than that of the patients without pleural fluid or pericardial effusion. (3)Themeasurements of CA125 may be used to evaluate the therapeutic effect for heart failureand short-term or long-term prognosis. (4)Logistic regression analysis implied CA125levels were statistically higher in CHF group than in the control group. No statisticallysignificant differences were shown for the other tumor markers.
