Objective: To investigate the status of uncertainty in illness, quality of life and anxiety and depression in patients with lung cancer in the city of Chang Sha , and to explore the factors influencing the uncertainty in illness and the relationship around uncertainty in illness and quality of life, anxiety, depression to provide some theoretical evidence for the psychological health for the patients with lung cancer. Methods: 300 patients with lung cancer from 3 hospitals in Chang Sha city were selected by random sampling to fill in the questionnaires bag including: the general information and relative factor survey, Mishel Uncertainty in illness sale(MUIS) of Chinese version, Quality of life questionnaire-lung cancer 43 (QLQ-LC43) Chinese versions, The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HAD). Descriptive analysis, T-test, completely randomized design analysis of variance, multiple linear Stepwise regression analysis and Pearson correlation analysis were performed using the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) 12.0.Results:1. All Scores and every factors score of the uncertainty in illness were at high level.2. There were significant differences in the all scores of uncertainty in illness or factors regarding occupation, the degree of their families and other's care and support, whether they are religious or not, being informed the diagnosis or not ,the method of therapy, the sense of unfit, smoking or not, and if smoking, the daily amount(p<0.05).3.The main influential factor of the uncertainty in illness is the religion(b'=-0.182).4. The scores of the factors in the quality of life are , from high to low, the function of recognition, emotion, body, society ,the sense of general health and the function of the role.5. The uncertainty in illness was positively correlated with the factor of the function of emotion-life quality (p<0.01); the score of ambiguity was positively correlate with the factors of body, emotion, recognition, society function (p<0.05); the score of unpredictability was negatively with the function of recognition (p<0.05).6. In the 280 patients, 50.71% of them had anxiety, 39.29% had depression, and 33.57 had both anxiety and depression.7. The factors of ambiguity and inconsistency were positively correlated with anxiety (p<0.05), the factors of complexity and unpredictability were negatively correlated with anxiety (p<0.01); the score of uncertainty in illness and the factors of ambiguity and inconsistency were positively correlated with depression, complexity and unpredictability were negatively correlated with depression (p<0.01). Conclusion:1.The uncertainty in illness in the patients with lung cancer was affected by the religion, occupation, the degree of their families and other's care and support , being informed the diagnosis or not, the methods of therapy, the sense of unfit, smoking or not, and if smoking, the daily amount.2. The degree of the uncertainty in illness in the patients with lung cancer was related to the degree of the quality of life and the degree of anxiety and depression.3. Decreasing the degree of uncertainty in illness in the patients with lung cancer is helpful to decrease the degree of anxiety and depression and improve their quality of life.
