Objective1. To investigate the uncertainty in illness, hope, coping modes, anxiety and depression in inpatients with breast cancer.2. To evaluate the correlation between uncertainty in illness and hope, coping modes, anxiety, depression in inpatients with breast cancer.3. To evaluate the related factors of the uncertainty in illness.MethodsThe study was carried out in general surgical department and oncology department of Fuzhou general hospital hospital.120 breast cancer patients were assessed with Chinese version MUIS-A(Mishel Uncertainty in Illness Scale- Adult), HHI(Herth Hope index), MCMQ(Medical Coping Modes Questionnaire), SAS(Self-Rating Anxiety Scale), SDS(Self-Rating Depression Scale) and the questionnaire about data of demography, sociology and disease. The statistics methods used include t-test,factor analysis, chi-square test, ANOVA(analysis of variance), spearman correlation analysis and stepwise hierarchical multiple regression and so on.Results1. The investigation results show that Cronbach's a coefficient of MUIS-A's total-scale and subscales were 0.923,0.900 and 0.781. Cronbach's a coefficient of HHI's total-scale and subscales were 0.971,0.929,0.889 and 0.836. MUIS-A and HHI have fine structural validity.2. Based on the study results, breast cancer patients experienced living with uncertainty and uncertainty was in media standard. There are significantly differences existing in patients'total uncertainty and its sub-factors during preoperative, postoperative and chemotherapy.3. The hope was in media and high standard.Compared with the ordinary mode, the score of"confrontation"and"avoidance"coping mode was significantly lower, the score of the"resigntion"coping mode was significantly higher , the score of"anxiety"and"depression"was significantly higher in inpatients with breast cancer.4. T-test indicated that operation modes and metastasis can significantly influence patients uncertainy. ANOVA test indicated that the following factors can significantly influence patients uncertainy: marriage, education degree, occupation, income, the payment modes of medical cost, the relationship of family, perceived illness serious, and illness phases. Spearman correlation analysis indicated the uncertainty in illness was negatively related to hope and"avoidance"coping mode, positively related to"resigntion"coping mode, anxiety and depression;"confrontation"coping mode was negatively related to"total uncertainty"and"ambiguity"uncertainty, positively related to"complexity"uncertainty.5. The total uncertainty was significantly positive correlation to anxiety, occupation and that is significantly negative corrlation to operation modes, cancer with or not with metastasis,"confrontation"coping mode and hope. The"ambiguity"uncertainty was significantly positive correlation to anxiety, perceived illness serious and that is significantly negative corrlation to operation modes, cancer with or not with metas- tasis and"avoidance"coping mode. The"complexity"uncertainty was significantly positive correlation to depression, the relationship of family and that is significantly negative corrlation to operation modes, hope and income.Conclusion1. Breast cancer patients experienced living with uncertainty, anxiety and depression. the patients took more"resigntion"coping mode, less"confrontation"and"avoidance" coping mode.2,The uncertainty of breast cancer patients was significantly correlation to hope, coping styles, anxiety and depression.3. Hope, coping modes, anxiety, depression and so on can affect breast cancer patients uncertainty greatly.4. Nurses should instruct patients with breast cancer to adopt effective coing modes and take measures to decrease the uncertainty in illness, improve their hope, relieve patients'psychological stress and improve the quality of life.
