Objects: To characterize the interrelationship among serum matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1), matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2), tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinase (TIMP-1) levels and ALP, NTX, bone mineral density (BMD) in primary osteoporotic vertebral and femoral neck fracture patients.Metheods: Serum MMP-1, MMP-2, TIMP-1,ALP and NTX were measured by ELISA. BMD was evaluated by DXA.Results: (1) There were no significant correlations among MMP-1, BMD, and ALP, NTX in primary osteoporotic vertebral and femoral neck fracture patients.(2) There were no significant correlations among MMP-2, BMD, and ALP, NTX in primary osteoporotic vertebral and femoral neck fracture patients.(3) There were no significant correlations among TIMP-1,BMD, and ALP, NTX in primary osteoporotic vertebral and femoral neck fracture patients.(4) There were no significant correlations among MMP-1, MMP-2, TIMP-1 and the severity of vertebral and femoral neck fracture.(5) Serum NTX was significantly higher in primary osteoporotic vertebral and femoral neck fracture patients than that of the age-matched patients with non-fracture osteoporosis.(6) In primary osteoporotic vertebral and femoral neck fracture patients , serum MMP-1 was significantly higher than that of the age-matched normal controls and patients with non-fracture osteoporosis. Conclusions: (1) There is no correlation among serum MMP-1, MMP-2, TIMP-1, and BMD, ALP, NTX in primary osteoporotic vertebral and femoral neck fracture patients.(2) There were no significant correlations among MMP-1, MMP-2, TIMP-1 and the severity of vertebral and femoral neck fracture.(3) Serum NTX was significantly higher in primary osteoporotic vertebral and femoral neck fracture patients than that of the age-matched patients with non-fracture osteoporosis. It may be a risk factor of osteoporotic vertebral and femoral neck fracture.(4) Serum MMP-1 in primary osteoporotic vertebral and femoral neck fracture patients is significantly higher than normal controls. Thus it may be used as a bone turnover marker and a fracture risk factor in clinical diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis patients.
