Objective To investigate the major causes of death and disease burden in Suzhou city,and to provide a basis for policy of prevention and control for diseases.Methods Classifications of death causes and coding were conducted by means of ICD-10,and mortality rate,standardized mortality rate proportional mortality rate,PYLL,the rate of PYLL and expectation life were calculated.Results Mortality rate was 690.07/10,0000 , and standardized mortality rate was 436.01/10,0000 from 2002 to 2005 in Suzhou city. Five major death causes were malignant tumor (mortality rate 185.58/10,00),cerebrovascular disease (136.48/10,0000),respiratory disease (105.58/ 10,0000),heart disease (64.45/10,0000),injure and poisoning(55.71/ 10,0000). The order of PYLL is as same as that of death cause. The fifth primary diseases influencing PYLL is injure and poisoning, diseases of the nervous system, the infectious diseases (not including tuberculosis of respiratory), diseases of the genitourinary systemmalignant tumor and malignancies. Among malignancies, the death rate of malignant neoplasm of stomach is the highest. Among the death rate of injure and poisoning, that of traffic accidents is the highest.Conclusion No matter according to the death rate and the constitutes of death causes or according to the PYLL,non-communicable disease and injure and poisoning would be major causes of death and disease burdens and important public health issues in inhabitants of Suzhou city. So, we should take all kinds of prevention and cure measures to attain good results according to particular death causes.
