Objective By understanding the situation of knowledge, attitude and practice of professional protection about the blood-transmitted diseases among college student nurses, and discussing the effective intervention measures, their safety ability for professional exposure will be improved, and vocational contact infection of the blood-transmitted diseases among college student nurses will be reduced. Methods The study has two parts. In the first part,a questionnaire survey on knowledge, attitude and practice about vocational contact infection prevention and the situation of professional exposure to the diseased blood or body liquid was conducted in 276 college student nurses. The second part is a experiment study,of which 120 college student nurses were randomly divided into 2 groups:experimental group(N=60)given health education on blood-transmitted diseases and professional exposure protection of paramedic, and control group(N=60) treated with nothing. Comparison was done between two groups with statastic method. Results Student nurses were obviously defective on the knowledge of blood-transmitted diseases and the consciousness of occupational protection.Only 12.7%of the student nurses accepted the education of occupational protection. In addition,78.6%of the student nurses sincerely hoped that they could accept much more professional safety knowledge. 20.3%of them had never received hepatitis B vaccination. The rate of gloving or washing hands in the last 3 nursing operations was low. There was significant difference in the situation of occupational protection in the last 3 nursing operations among student nurses of different clinical departments(x~2=21.81,P<0.05).91.7%of the student nurses had exposed to the diseased blood or body liquid during the last two months, averaged 4.0,and only few of them had taken effective measures to prevent vocational contact infection. In the experiment study, the rates of correct answers to the professional protection knowledge, attitude and practice of the experimental group were significantly higher than that of the control group post- experimentally(P<0.05),and were significantly higher than that of the same group before the experiment(P<0.05).Conclusion Student nurses had a worse consciousness and poor safety ability about professional protection.Health education on occupational protection of college student nurses is a very important way to help them master the protection measures of vocational contact infection and avoid infection and transmission of the blood-transmitted diseases. So student nurses, nursing schools, hospitals and so on should collaborate and adopt effective measures to improve the professional safety schooling, training and management.
