Objective: To investigate the alteration of bone mineral density (BMD), pulmonary function, blood gas analysis and nutritional state in moderate and severe patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and to explore the relationship between chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and osteoporosis. Method: Thirty-seven patients with COPD and forty controls were studied. Body mass index (BMI), bone mineral density (BMD), total protein, albumin , biochemical index relative to the bone formation in blood were measured and analyzed. Results: 1. BMD at L2-L4 and left hip which includes Neck, G. T , InterTro in patients with COPD were significantly lower than those in controls.(P < 0.05) 2. BMI, album of people with COPD disease decreased obviously than those in controls. (P < 0.05) 3. BMD of patients with respiratory failure lower than the non- respiratory failure patients, excessively at lumbar vertebra. 4. In this research , besides L2 an d L3, there is no difference in other parts of hip and lumbar vertebra. 5. The incidence of osteoporosis in moderate and severe patients with COPD are much higher than the controls. Meanwhile, the incidence of osteoporosis at L1 in both groups are higher than other position. Conclusion: The reduce of body mass index (BMI), bone mineral density (BMD) are much conspicuous than the controls. Also there are differences in bone mineral density between respiratory failure patients and non- respiratory failure patients. COPD would be consider as a whole body disease, which can effect the entirety through a great number of sectors.
