Objective To investigate the prevalence of hypertension in the middle-age and elderly people among the Uygur and Han nationality residents in Xinjiang, and to provide the basis for further control. Methods Adopting a multistage stratified random cluster sampling approaches to survey the residents from 6 areas such as Bazhou Yanqi country and surrounding seven countries and townships, Hotan region Moyu and Hotan country town and the surrounding six townships in southern Xinjiang ; Turpan region southwest of the county town and surrounding nine rural towns in Eastern Xinjiang, the northern suburbs Bole area, the suburbs of the city, a total of 31 urban and townships Changji Hui Autonomous region of Changji city and surrounding village, Urumqi City Community, and analysis middle-age and elder Uygur and Han people older than 50-year-old suffered from hypertension in totally 8583 individuals. Results 1. The prevalence of hypertension among population over age 50 in Xinjiang was 50.55% (49.57%), the prevalence of hypertension increases with age. 2. In which, the prevalence of male hypertension were 48.85% (47.40%), 52.07% (51.67%) for females, a statistically significant difference is showed between men and women (χ2= 8.862, P <0.05). 3. the prevalence of hypertension in Uygur was 49.53 % (48.62%), and 51.93% (50.95%) in Han nationality, The hypertensive ratio of Han nationality is higher than Uygur (χ2 =4.829, P <0.05). 4.the Uygur men were 46.56% (45.40%) and women were 52.44%(51.82%), a statistically significant difference is showed between the Uygur men and women (χ2=17.103, P<0.01); the Han men were 52.35% (50.51%) and women were 51.61% (51.45%), there is no difference between the Han men and women(χ2=0.201, P>0.05). 5.the Uygur men have lower prevalence than the Han men(χ2=12.961, P<0.01); there is no difference between the Han and Uygur in females(χ2=0.317, P>0.05). 6. The prevalence of isolated systolic hypertension (ISH) was 14.63% (13.74%), and 28.95% of hypertension. the prevalence of ISH increases with age. Conclusions The results of this study showed that the higher prevalence of hypertension in Xinjiang. Strengthing the prevention and treatment of hypertension among high-risk population and using proper measures of intervention to decrease the prevalence of hypertension among population is necessary.
