Objective: Fractures of the femoral neck constitute 53% of all fracture of the proximal femur and 3.6% of all the fracture. The number of femoral neck fracture will increase dramatically during the coming decades. The incidence of nonunion after displaced fracture is in the range of 50 to 60% with traction or cast treatment and 4 to 33% after internal fixation. Avascular necrosis occurs in 20 to 40% of patients with the fractures. Although prosthetic replacement has clearly established a role in the treatment of these fractures, internal fixation remains an effective option in select clinical circumstances. In patients undergoing internal fixation, the quality of reduction and the selection and placement of implants are critical factors for success. |
