Objective:To investigate the relationship between high homocysteine(Hcy) and stroke,as well as the correlation between high homocysteine and the traditional risk factors of stroke to provide new evidences for stroke prevention. Methods:We selected 155 cases of acute stroke patients in the Department of Neurology of the First Hospital of Shanxi Medical University, including 111 cases of atherosclerotic cerebral infarction(ACI group) and 44 cases of cerebral hemorrhage(CH group);and selected 111 cases of non-stroke patients as the control group. We recorded the levels of Hcy,TC,TG,HDL-C,LDL-C,FIB and hypertension, diabetes, smoking and alcohol drinking history, and then compared the levels of Hcy among the ACI group,CH group and the control group, analyzed the stroke risk factors and investigated the correlation between Hcy and the traditional risk factors of stroke. Results:The Hcy levels of ACI group,CH group and the control group were 19.5±9.8umol/L,19.9±11.8umol/L and 16.3±8.0umol/L respectively.Analyzed by one-way ANOVA,the differences of the three groups were statistically significant,P<0.05.Analyzed by LSD-t test, the difference of Hcy levels between the control group and ACI group was statistically significant,P<0.05;the difference of Hcy levels between the control group and CH group was statistically significant,P<0.05.There was no statistic significance between the ACI group and CH group,P>0.05.We analyzed the risk factors of stroke by logistic regression and found that Hcy went into the regression model with the OR value of 1.30,95%CI from 1.21 to 1.43,P<0.05.It suggested that the high Hcy was an independent risk factor of stroke. We analyzed the correlation of Hcy and the traditional risk factors of stroke by Spearman rank correlation and found that the correlation coefficients of age,sex,TC,TG,HDL-C,LDL-C,FIB,hypertension,diabetes,smoking and alcohol drinking were 0.049,0.089,-0.40,0.084,-0.179,-0.141,-0.75,0.091,0.173,0.003 and 0.059 respectively,P>0.05.It suggested that Hcy and the traditional risk factors had no correlation.Of the cases selected, the number of high Hcy without hypertension was 32 and the incidence of stroke was 46.9%;the number of high Hcy with hypertension was 27 and the incidence of stroke was 77.8%.The difference of the both was statistically significant(χ~2=5.879,P<0.05),and the incidence of stroke of high Hcy with hypertension was higher.Conclusion:①High Hcy is an independent risk factor of stroke, and has no relationship with the types of stroke.②Hcy has no correlation with the traditional risk factors of stroke, but patients with both high Hcy and hypertension are more susceptible to stroke than those with just only high Hcy without hypertension.
