ObjectiveThe purposes of the study were to investigate the prevalence and risk factors of obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) in adults aged over 20 years in Fuzhou city, provide epidemiological data for prevention and treatment of the disease, and establish a data base for prospective study.MethodsFive thousand five hundred subjects were derived from a random and cluster sampling of the population in five districts of Fuzhou city; they were asked to answer the questions from questionnaires.According to the degree of snoring, 315 subjects with a snoring score≥3 degree and 100 subjects with a snoring score=2 degree were selected randomly to undergo polysomnography monitoring for a whole night, so that the prevalence of the disease was estimated and risk factors for OSAHS were analyzed.ResultsFour thousand five hundred and ninty five subjects responsed(83.55% ) the questionnaires.and the total validated questionnaires were 4286(effective power 93.28%).Among the subjects, 606(14.14%) had habitual snoring and the estimated prevalence of OSAHS defined by apnea-hypopnea index (AHI)≥5 and Epworth sleepiness scale ( ESS)≥9 was 4.78%.Multivariate analysis revealed that age, smoking, family snoring, neck-circumference , waist circumference , and abnormality of the upper airway were respectively independent risk factors for OSAHS.ConclusionsThe estimated prevalences of snoring and OSAHS in adults aged over 20 years in Fuzhou city are high.We should do the job carefully according to the prevalence of snoring and OSAHS to cut down the prevalence of OSAHS by controling modifiable risk factors such as smoking, central obesity, and abnormality of the upper airway et al which are correlated with the occurrence of OSAHS.
