| Objective The evaluation of NBI for diagnosis of Barrett esophagus was discussed. Methods Seventeen patients with previously diagnosed BE from December in 2008 to April in 2009 were enrolled in this study. Conventional endoscopy followed by NBI ,then chromoendscopy(indigo carmine) combined magnifying endoscopy was used and the quality of images such as columnar-lined esophagus(CLE) ,the mucosal patterns and the superficial vasculature were evalued. When NBI was used ,the BE pit patterns were observed according to Endo T pit patterns and biopsies were obtained through the length of the suspected Barrett oesophagus to identify specialized intestinal metaplasia (SIM) .Results Visualization of the CLE was best by NBI.In contrast to conventional endoscopy and chromoendscopy, NBI captured the optimal view of Barrett's mucosal patterns and superficial vasculature. According to Endo T patterns(IV and V pit pattern are suspected of having SIM epithelium),the accuracy of specialized intestinal metaplasia(SIM) on target biopsies was 88%,the sensitivity was80%,the specificity was 92%.Conclusion Narrow band imaging (NBI) is a new technique, which is not only very easy to operated, but also can capture optimal view of the columnar-lined esophagus(CLE) ,the mucosal patterns and the superficial vasculature. Meanwhile ,taget biopsies is guided by NBI, improving the detection of SIM. |
