ObjectivesTo analyze current statue of mental health of caregivers of patients with stroke,and to explore the relationship between their mental health and social support ofcoping style. To provide a reference evidence for designing nursing intervention onthe caregivers who could betterly play a role, and for maintaining and promoting thehealth level of the strokes and their families.MethodsThe questionnaires were used to survey statue of mental health of caregivers ofpatients with strokes who were in6hospitals of Xiangtan and Hengyang city. Thequestionnaires included four parts:①basic information scale;②irritabilitydespression and anxiety scale;③social support rating scale;④simplified coping stylequestionnaire. Statistical Product and Service Solutions version17.0(SPSS17.0) wasused to analyze the data. The statistical methods involved descriptive statisticsanalysis, ANOVA, independent samples t-test, Pearson correlation analysis, stepwisemultiple regression analysis, and etc.Results(1) Among4dimensions of the Caregivers, the highest score wasdespondent(1.37±0.03), the lowest score was inter-irritation(1.23±0.04). According tocaregives’ educational level, monthly income and payment way of patients, thedifferences of the scores of their despondent, anxiety, inter-irritability andouter-irritability were statistically significant (P<0.05).(2)The total score of social support was (38.80±0.40). Among3dimensions, thehighest score was subjective support(5.92±0.10),the lowest score was utilization of support (2.44±0.03).(3)The score of Caregivers’ positive coping style was (1.54±0.02), it was lower thanthat of the negative coping style (1.66±0.03). So the Caregivers mostly took thenegative coping style.(4)There was a negative association between the Caregivers’ mental health andsocial support, positive coping style or negative coping style. According to caregives’monthly income, the level of learning disease and payment way of patients, thedifferences of the scores of their positive coping style and negative coping style werestatistically significant (P<0.05).(5)Either Caregivers’social support or coping style was predictive for their mentalhealth. Both social support and coping style could explain about11.3%variation.Conclusions(1) The strokes’ caregivers had serious problem on despondent, anxious,inter-irritation and outer-irritation. Among them, the most seruous problem wasdespondent. The educational level, monthly income and payment way of patientswere mainly influential factors for them.(2)The level of social support of strokes patients’ caregivers was much higher. Itcould be predictive for their mental health.(3)The strokes’ caregivers mostly took negative coping style. The coping style waspredictive for their mental health.(4)The social support and coping style were mainly influential factors for theCaregivers’ mental health.
