The genus Viburnum (Caprifoliaceae) includes ca.230 species, including shrubs and arbors. About 80 species are widely distributed in China, mainly used as ornamental trees. Several species are employed as folk medicines to treat different diseases such as furuncle, fever, cough and tumefaction with their roots, stems or leaves. Extensive studies of the genus Viburnum have led to the identification of many compounds, such as diterpenoids, triterpenoids, iridoids, flavonoids and so on. A number of compounds of them with good antioxidant and anti-tumor activitives. There are less studies in research of the genus Viburnum's chemical constituents and activity ingredients in China. The study of chemical constituents for V. foetidum Wall. var. rectangulatum (Graebn.) Rehd has not been reported. On my searching for plant-derived bioactivities compounds, the plantof V. foetidum Wall. var. rectangulatum (Graebn.) Rehd has been chemically studied.12 compounds have been isolated, purified from this plant. Their structures have been determined by UV, MS, NMR analysis, respectively.8 compounds of them are first isolated from this plant. And do antioxidant activity research for the 5 compounds of these compounds.1. The advances in isolation and bioactivities of components from genus Viburnum. Have been reviewed, which can provide the basement for the research ofⅤ. foetidum Wall. var. rectangulatum (Graebn.) Rehd.2. The chemical constituents in the petroleum ether extract ofⅤ. foetidum Wall. var. rectangulatum (Graebn.) Rehd. have been separated by repeated chromatography on silica gel to obstain compoundⅠandⅡ.3. The chemical constituents in the ethyl acetate extract ofⅤ. foetidum Wall. var. rectangulatum (Graebn.) Rehd. have been isolated by chromatography on silica gel, Sephadex LH-20, HPLC and so on and gain sever compounds (Ⅲ-Ⅸ).4. The chemical constituents in the n-butanol extract ofⅤ. foetidum Wall. var. rectangulatum (Graebn.) Rehd. have been curely purified by D-101 macroporous adsorption resin eluted to obtain the components with different polarity. The fraction of Z-25% ethanol has been isolated by RP-C 18 and Pre-HPLC to obtain compoundⅩ; The fraction of Z-50% ethanol has been isolated by chromatography on silica gel, Sephadex LH-20 to obtain compoundⅪand compoundⅫ. 5. According to the m.p., the molecular, physical and chemical properties and comparing the data of their wave spectroscopy to relevant references respectively,12 compounds' structures have been determined. They areβ-sitosterol(Ⅰ), Stigmasterol (Ⅱ), Vanillin(Ⅲ), Vanillic acid (Ⅳ), Oleanolic acid(V),5-methoxy-4'-hydroxyflavone(Ⅵ),2-hydroxy- benzoicacid(Ⅶ), Trans-3,5,4'-trihydroxystilbene(VID),4-methoxy-2',4'-di- hydroxychalcone(Ⅸ), Piceid(X), 1,3,5-trimethoxybenzene(Ⅺ), Chry- soeriol 7-glucuronide(Ⅻ)6. The research of DPPH free radical-scavenging of 5 compoundsⅥ,Ⅷ,Ⅸ,Ⅹ,Ⅻdiscovered they have strong antioxidant activity. The results of present study will be useful to further phytochemical investigation on V. foetidum Wall. var. rectangulatum (Graebn.) Rehd.
