| Plants classified in the Ervatamia genus have been proved to be a rich source of indole alkaloids, from which many iboga-type indole alkaloids had been obtained with potential anti-addiction activity. In our previous work, the total alkaloids of Ervatamia yunnanensis were found to have effect of antiaddictive properties on morphine-dependent rats. As a part of our continuing research on the isolation of anti-addictive active compounds from the Ervatamia genus, we studied on the chemical contituents of Ervatamia officinalis. This topic selected Ervatamia officinalis, a common Ervatamia genus plant in China, to conduct a systematic bio-active constituents research. Ervatamia officinalis is a shrub distributed in the Maguan, Yunnan prov, growing within 150~800 mountain forest. Local folks use it to governance belly hurts. To investigate the effective components, we studied the chemical constituents of the roots and stems of it. 37 compounds had been isolated and 30 compounds of them identified based on chemical reaction, spectral analysis (1HNMR, 13C-NMR, 2DNMR, and MS) and by comparison their spectral data with those reported previously in the literatures. Among them, 1 compounds was new compound, 5 compounds were first found from the genus, and 10 compounds were first found from the plant.
