Objective:The purpose of this clinical study was to evaluate the difference of the curative effect on the periodontal disease and the pain degree of patients between the root planning with conventional hand instruments and Vector ultrasonic system. Methods: Thirty patients with chronic periodontitis were involved in this study which was used self-control design. All the subjects were randomly divided into two groups and had received the subgingival scaling. The teeth in quadrant 1 andâ…£were included in Vector group which were scaled with Vector system. Those in quadrantâ…¡andâ…¢were included in hand group which were scaled with Gracey sealers. Scaling and root planning for the Vector group was performed by using the Vector system. All clinical index including PLI(plaque index), SBI(sulcus bleeding index)and PD (Probing depth) were recorded at baseline and 3 months after the treatment. A visual analogue scale(VAS) was used to evaluate the subjective pain degree. Results:PLI, SBI and PD values were significantly decreased after treatment in the two groups (P<0.05). No statistically significant differences in SBI and PD could be observed between patients treated by Vector system and Gracey scalers(P>0.05), while PLI had greater improvement in patients treated by Vector system(P<0.05). The pain value in Vector group was significantly lower than hand group (P<0.05). Conclusion:Vector ultrasonic system relieved discomfortable sensations compared with traditional hand curettes. The Vector ultrasonic system may have an good clinical effect by relieving the discomfort during the therapy.
