Objective To investigate the relationship between Brachial ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) and coronary heart disease, and to evaluate the predicting value of baPWV for the patients with coronary heart disease. Methods 139 patients were divided into coronary heart disease group and non-coronary heart disease group by coronary artery angiography, baPWV and ABI were measured in 67 patients (male patients 43 and female patients 24) with coronary heart disease and 72 patients (male patients 51 and female patients 21) without coronary heart disease. 67 patients with coronary heart disease were divided into three subgroups according to the number of affected coronary branches:single affected branch group(n=22), double affected branches group (n=27), and three affected branches group(n=18), baPWV and ABI were also measured in the three subgroups. The general clinical data were carefully collected in every patient. Results The indices of general clinical data and ABI were no differences in the two groups, but baPWV was significantly increased in patients with coronary heart disease (1978.6±289.5cm/s vs 1267.4±332.8cm/s, P<0.01). baPWV of the patients with single branch of vascular disease, two branches of vascular disease, and three branches of vascular disease were 1493.7±282.4cm/s, 1897.2±322.3cm/s, and 2319.6±372.2cm/s respectively, baPWV was increased with the number of diseased vessels(P<0.05).Conclusion BaPWV could predict coronary heart disease to some degree, and elevated baPWV is related to the severity of coronary heart disease.
