Object:To evaluate clinical reach of krypton yellow laser photocoagulation combined with Traditional Chinese Medicine for diabetic macular edema(DME)in nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy. Methods:Forty patients (69 eyes) were divided randomly into the treatment group and the contrast group, twenty (35 eyes) patients in the treatment group and twenty (34 eyes) in the other.Patients in the treaty group were treated with Chinese traditional medicines (modified Buyanghuanwu decoction) combined with laser photocoagulation in the contrasted group were treated with with laser photocoagulation only. The clinical therapeutic effectiveness was observed in two groups.Results:(1)Three month later, the sight rise of in the treated group have the statistical significance with the contrasted group(P=0.020, P<0.05); (2)The fundus fluorescein angiography(FFA)showed macular edema in central retinal thickness of patients of these 2 groups showed significant difference as compared to that before treatment, (P=0.034, P< 0.01);(3)The optical coherence tomography(OCT)showed macular edema in central retinal thickness of patients of these 2 groups showed significant difference as compared to that before treatment, (P=0.025, P<0.01).The former seemed better;(4)Three month after therapy, in the rate of retinal haemorrhage and effusion resolution was 88.6% in therapy group and 79.4% in contrast group. The two groups have the statistical significance(P= 0.049, P<0.05); (5) Three month after therapy, in the rate of macular edema and microaneurysm resolution was 85.7% in therapy group and 70.6% in control group. The two groups have the statistical significance(P=0.045, P<0.05);Conclusions:(1)Both these two groups, (modified Traditional Chinese Medicine plus krypton yellow laser photocoagulation and laser photocoagulation only), proved to have positive results in the treatment of DME patients. But, combined therapy group did have better therapeutic effects. (2) The traditional Chinese medicine combined with krypton yellow laser photocoagulation have better therapeutic effects in improving visual acuity, reducing macular edema, facilitating blood and exudates absorption, reducing microaneurysm. So the combined treatment could be more ideal.
