| Chinese American playwright, the stage manager Ping Chong has received many national and international awards since he began to create theater works in 1972. Recently, people got to know him and start to accept and appreciate his style of artistic presentation. Chong is a versatile artist and adventurous practitioner, who occasionally performs his own plays. In the era of postdramatisches theater, he puts his creative idea into practice and makes innovative experiments on the stage. By adding multimedia elements into the traditional theater and breaking the conventional narrative techniques, Chong brings the theater stage a series of new creative approaches.Chinoiserie is one of Ping Chong's experimental theater productions, which was first performed in 1995. Chinoieserie is the second piece of his East-West Quartet play and there are lots of avant-garde narrative methods that grasp our eyes. This academic paper would base on studying the play script of Chinoiserie to introduce Ping Chong's experimental narrative strategies adopted in it. Firstly, I would like to make a comparison of the diasporic subjects between Ping Chong and his Chinese American counterparts. Secondly, I will move forward to state the characteristics of the play's documentary text, rhythmic words and mixed cast, which differs from the traditional arrangements of the drama's elements. Thirdly, I will spend more lines analyzing Ping Chong's experimental narrative strategies and his styled artistic presentations. At last, I would make a brief summary of Ping Chong's successful experiments in Chinoiserie and point out the status quo of research on his experimental theater works. All in all, this academic paper aims to introduce Ping Chong and his successful narrative strategies to the modern theater stage, in the hope that the modern theater stage could borrow some ideas from him and breathe new life into the traditional stage. |
