Pastoral poetry in Song Dynasty was very prosperous, having an effect on the later literature. Fan Chengda was said to be the leading poet in Southern Song Dynasty, even the whole Song Dynasty, in other words, he could be said to be "a master of pastoral poetry in ancient China". He has made a great contribution for the idyll development. But until now, researchers take Fan Chengda idyll's connotation as a breakthrough point to explore it, but pay less attention to its artistic aspects. Although some scholars make some useful research in this aspect, but often are restricted by some dominant characteristics so as to just have superficial meaning, the further study on Fan Chengda idyll art's research is necessary and possible. The paper is based on Fan's representative idyllic works "Si Shi Tian Yuan Za Xing" and "La Yue Cun Tian Yue Fu" to study the artistic characteristics of pastoral poetry from two aspects. The poetry art's carrier lies in the poetry itself and its'birth and development, therefore the first part of the paper mainly discusses idyll's concept, the development as well as the social and individual reasons of Fan's idylls so as to have a clear aim of research object. The second part mainly explores the artistic characteristics of Fan Chengda idyll from poetry aspects such as idea, writing technique, style and so on.
