The academic community concerns about how to increase the interest of Chinese textbooks. This paper is trying to use appropriate illustration as an effective way to enrich contents and motivate students' language learning interests. Also, for students at the beginning level, with limited Chinese characters, the visible illustration can help to provide language practice scenarios and help them to understand the language situation and language structure meaningThis article focuses on illustration's function, current issues and problems in elementary Chinese textbooks for adults to summarize the general design principles and make analysis the specific principles for the words, characters, texts, grammar phonetics and exercises.The main conclusions are:(1) illustrations has an advantage in the primary stage and has the function of explanatory, supplementary and interesting effect; (2) the illustrations in current Chinese books has certain problems in content and form, such as not closely combined with the text and is not clear; (3) illustration should be directly perceived through the senses, accurately and elegantly; (4) illustration has a different style of directional.
