D.H. Lawrence, an outstanding English novelist and critic, is famous for the fresh ideas, symbolic beauty and delicate taste in his works. D.H. Lawrence applies the idea of harmony to writing and puts forward the idea in literary creation. He considers the harmonious cohabitation and cooperation of the two sexes as an ideal relationship between man and woman. Therefore, the thesis devotes a large space to a close reading and thorough analysis of the novels to expound and search for D.H. Lawrence's idea of harmony. Lawrence creates plenty of works which reflect the inner intuition and instinct vividly in his life. The Rainbow and Women in Love are regarded as D.H. Lawrence's great achievements in literary creation.The Rainbow, D.H. Lawrence's masterpiece was finished in 1915. Its accomplishment of art is highly praised and the novel is evaluated as a great English novel. Lawrence, in The Rainbow, describes three generations. Tom and Lydia, Will and Anna, Ursula and Anton, Lydia, the first generation, becomes aware of her female self. Lydia is a Polish widow. She has serve and adore her former husband,a revolutionist, and always exists like his shadow following him. But she has never really enjoyed the life. However,her marriage with Tom bring her new life. In her marriage with Tom, she maintains her liberty and independence. Anna, fiercely revolts against her husband's man-supremacy and hypocritical Christianity and achieves her self-fulfillment. Ursula, the third generation, is Lawrence's ideal harmonious modern woman image. She discards traditional woman images and seeks for social identity. She pursues independence and liberty. In Women in Love, it shows the author, D .H. Lawrence, pursues the idea of harmony through the description of the relationships, Gerald and Gudrun, Birkin and Ursula. Even though they are full of contradiction, they reach the harmonious unity of spirit and body in some way.The thesis is composed of five parts. In part one the author introduces the background information of D.H. Lawrence and his works in brief. Part two presents the harmony in The Rainbow, stressing the idea of harmony by the couples in the novel The Rainbow. Part three dwells on harmony in Women in Love. These two parts are the centre of the thesis. With the thought of balance (Polarity) to state the relationship between male and female, and then indicates the author's idea of harmony. In the fourth part the author analyzes the ideal harmony in the works. And then analyzes Lawrence's pursuit for the idea of harmony between male and female. Part five is the last part. The end of the part gives a brief summary of the thesis.In this thesis, great efforts are made to analyze the relationships between male and female represented in D.H. Lawrence's novels The Rainbow and Women in Love. The idea of harmony is very important, which guides his literary works. By analyzing the relationships between male and female have been presented in his works, we can see that they achieve the harmony and their unity of spirit and body in a sense. And then they fulfill self-fulfillment at last. Meanwhile,We also realize that D.H. Lawrence puts effort into pursuing the idea of harmony between male and female.
