Part 1 Mind resources Each producer has his particular psychological consciousness of arts because each ofthem is inevitably influenced by the society and the special history in which they grew. Thechanges of the society, the political influence, the aesthetic attitude towards art and thechoice of culture can all be reflected in his films. We can see his notions of value, his vividartistic characteristics in his films. For producer Chen Kaige, his sense of anxiety and theunforgettable complex of the Chinese Culture Revolution are the most important mindresources which he gained through his rich life experiences. These are also his two maindistinguished features of his culture attitude of shooting films.(1) Sense of anxiety Chen Kaige, as one of the representatives of the fifth generation of Chinesefilm-producers, undoubtedly inherited the traditional Chinese culture and he also inheritedthe spirits of Chinese distinguished intellectuals of the time. We can feel his sense of anxietyand his thoughtful emotions through his concept of the morality of Chinese traditionalculture and humanity; his reflection of the Chinese intellectuals' lives and their fates;through his criticism of the backwardness and ignorance of the Chinese traditionalagriculture literature. He inherited the morality of the Chinese intellectuals and he also tookin the nutrition from the western countries' humanism and modern literature which makeshim quite different from other film-producers. His sense of anxiety differs from thetraditional sense of anxiety , thus he has developed his own artistic style.(2) Complex of the Chinese Culture Revolution Chen Kaige's experiences in the Chinese Culture Revolution give him unforgettablememory complex. Chinese Culture Revolution together with the history of the Red Guards isthe central psychological parameter in his spiritual world. That era not only left with himthe valuable recollecting materials, but also provided him with lots of film subject of loveand resentment. He began to concern about the living conditions of our nationality at thebeginning of his career of film-producing. His films are full of strong atmosphere ofhumanism and concerns of man's life.Part 2 Portraying the figures in the coordinate system Chen Kaige is always giving thoughtful concerns about history, culture and the relationbetween man and society in his films. And he conveys these unique concerns through filmlanguages and visual picture symbols. In the coordinate system of history and culture andnature, he depicts the vivid human figures of the time.(1) Nature and society—the axes of abscissa Chen Kaige chooses nature and society as the axes of abscissa and he makes deep andunique reflection of the relation between man, nature and society in it. In a certain degree, his films show the law of unity and opposites.a.Human being and nature—" the yellow earth" In the oriental philosophy system, man and nature has a conflicting relation. Man liveand procreate and live on and on in nature since the ancient times. With man's knowledge ofthe nature developed, the fear of nature has turned into the dependence to it. Thus make the 22people on the land love it and also fear it; they want to break the relation with it and at thesame time they cannot live without it. In the film "the yellow earth", land is the real carrierof art. It is the land on which they live that decides the living means and living standard ofthe local people. The earth on one hand fosters man, but destroy s them on the other.b. Individual and the collective—" the military parade" This film presents us the relationship between individual and collective, others andsociety. Individual and society is another thinking topic of Chen Kaige after he was greatlyinfluenced by the heroism of the western countries. On one hand, he wants to show hisconcerns of the lives of individuals; on the other h...
