The research on the exercise design in the textbooks is a new but complicated item. Many scholars have appealed to make some related research, but how to make this research is still unknown. In this paper, the author tries to set up a multi-dimension research structure. Based on the six sets of elementary intensive reading textbooks, the paper analyzed four main elements of the exercise design, including the exercises intensity, density, style and layout, and then summarized their features and some affecting factors. In addition, the paper set up some criterions to make further analysis, made a survey on the utilization of the textbook exercise, emphatically considered and discussed about the scientificity and validity of the exercise design. On the research result, the author put forwards some referential suggestions and principles for the compliers.
