The Study On The Chinese Loan Words In The New Age

The study takes Chinese loan words appeared in the new age as its object. The first stepis to build the loan words database in the new age. Based on the database, we combinequantitative study with qualitative study to analyze the cause for the loan words producinglargely and observe the new traits and developmental trends of the loan words in the new age.In the last we summarize the active influence on the modern Chinese of the loan words. There are many facts that result in the upsurge for Chinese absorbing loan words, such asintegrating of the world, carrying out of the opening policy, developing of the technology andthe impact of the media as well as the English fever in Chinese. In comparison with previous cases, this time Chinese loan words have many new traits.The proportion of words absorbed by transliteration has declined, whereas there are a lot ofloan words in Latin letters coming into being. The loan words coming from Japanese havealso decreased. The variant words have lessened. The content of the loan words in the newage relate to a lot of aspects. The loan words which will absorb in the future will hold on thecharacters as follow: mostly coming from English, centralizing on the nouns and mostlyrelating to living and technology. The multi-syllable words and words in Latin letters willincrease continually.More and more new loan words are emerging and using in Chinese in the new age, whichmakes the Chinese vocabulary more abundant, improves the Chinese expressive force, andincrease the amount of the derivates. Besides the influence on the vocabulary, the loan wordsin the new age have influence on modern Chinese pronunciation and grammar etc.In the last we have put forward some ideas on the design of the database and the languageCorpus for compiling The Dictionary of New Age Loan Words. Our motive is to attract moreattention to the compilation of the dictionary.
