Metaphor and metonymy are treated as two different figures of speech in traditional rhetoric. In modern theories, metaphor and metonymy are often regarded as two types of thinking. In this article, the author analyzes the two important phenomena's basis, structures and their cultural meanings as extension of semantic meaning in Chinese. As metonymy basically involves using a special property of something or its special relationship with other things to refer to it, its major function is to help the hearer to locate or recognize the referent and its special characteristics. Metaphor is cognitively more useful since people often create metaphors to understand a relatively less well-known domain of things in teens of things from relatively better-known domains. By analyzing the metonymy and metaphor in the extension of semantic meaning in Chinese, the author pointed out the Chinese people's character of thinking, appreciating beauty and worth mindset.
