The development of cognitive psychology and discourse analysis has extensive impact on the foreign language teaching methodologies. Many teachers begin to attach importance to discourse-based College English teaching. Based on discourse analysis and cognitive psychology, this thesis elaborates on the importance and concrete procedure of discourse-based College English teaching. In the author's opinion, the traditional English teaching based on grammar-translation is still influential nowadays and new words, phrases and even sentence structures are often taken as discrete language points overemphasized by the teacher, however, the gist of the discourse is usually overlooked and students "can not see the wood for the trees". As a result, students only master parts of the language skills instead of truly improving their language proficiency and learning autonomy. Discourse analysis focuses on describing organization and features of discourses at a high level and lays foundation for discourse-based English teaching. In discourse-based English teaching, teachers teach students to comprehend discourse holistically with the aid of the analysis of organization and features of discourse.
