| Cooperative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) was the only successful democratic socialism party in North America Continent. There seems little doubt that it had caused great attention. The thesis focuses on several aspects. 1) discusses how CCF was formed by completely examining its dominating parts; 2) explores the reasons and early struggling process of farmers' rebellion in details because it was, in a sense, for these reasons that fanners continued to rebel and the early struggling process of farmers' rebellion provided experiments and lessons for CCF; 3) deals with the labor movement development and points out that the disintegration of labors resulted in the regional characteristic of CCF which of course was closely connected with fanners' regional location; 4) depict clearly socialism development, such as its genesis and characteristics, which had distinctive differences from socialism in United States of America. The thesis is divided into 4 parts.Part I, Farmers' rebellion movement before the Depression. Unfair elements in national policy, inequality of west political position in Canada and two regional political parties were main reasons for farmers' rebellion movement. Farmers had struggle for a long time. They had economic struggle and organized agriculture cooperation organizations. Then, they had political struggle and established a political party. Although farmers' political party failed, but it had brought about important influence and gave valuable experiments to CCF. With economic boom arrival in the late 1920s, the farmers' position declined in country development.Part II, Movement of labor and socialism. No united labor organization, rich regional character and whole moderate condition were two characteristics of Canadian labor movement. Influenced by them, west labor movement's mainstream turned from radical to moderate. There were two categories of socialism in Canada, namely, doctrinal socialism and democratic socialism. Democratic socialism was Canadian native socialism, also was Canadian mainstream socialism. Because of regional difference, the relationship between labor and socialism were varied.Part III, the Depression and CCF founding. The depression of the 1930s imposed serious influence on Canadian economy and society. The point came that farmers and laborers organized an alliance. Under left wing intellectuals and Democratic socialist advocating and west labor congress boost, farmer organizations, labor organizations and other west organizations established CCF. CCF could be established also because it adopted three well-proven methods, which can make various groups rally.Part IV, Conclusion. CCF was a west regional political party with two immanent contradictions. It was the two contradictions that influenced CCF, got it never to have more achievements and resulted in CCF amending continually its program. Finally, CCF combined with Canadian labor congress to form New Democratic Party (NDP). But the new party nature had differed from CCF. |
