When the human beings come into the era of urbanization, "city" has become a more and more significant theme in literature. But "the city in literature" is a "word-city" which is created by text. It is not a replica of real city, but the representation of real city. To the same city, different writers often have different aspects which they focus on and show different attitudes as well, thus they will shape one and the same city into different literary images.The city needs not only to be narrated, but it also needs to be read. This dissertation researches on the novels of Mu Shiying's and Zhang Ailing's , together with French author Andre Malraux's La Condition Humaine,English author Christopher New's Shanghai,English author from Japanese origin Kazuo Ishiguro's When We Were Orphans, analyses the images of Old Shanghai in these works. Chapter 1 works towards the relationship between "real city" and "word-city", introduces some related situation about "real Old Shanghai" and "word Old Shanghai"; Chapter 2 to chapter 4, revolving around "the city in literature", separately studies three different images of Old Shanghai mainly through text analysis; Chapter 5 carries on the comparison to the similarities and differences of the three images and analyses the reason.
