Satisfying learners'needs is the starting and end of educational reform in English. Given the realities learners vary across various internal and external factors and the learners'English level differs in the diversified areas of Chongqing, the degree to which learners'learning needs are being met by the existing new textbook needs to be re-assessed, so that textbooks and resources can be adjusted accordingly to meet the learners'needs. The current study reports on a large-scale assessment designed to investigate the learning needs of learners among the students of 3 junior high schools of Chongqing to evaluate the degree to which these needs are being addressed. The purpose of the study is to find whether the new textbook is adaptable to the Junior English learners in Chongqing. So the following three questions are investigated:(1) What are learners'needs in English learning?(2) What are students'and teachers'attitudes towards the textbook?(3) In what ways does the textbook cater for the needs of the learners in the three English levels in different schools? In order to produce a more realistic picture of reality, qualitative research is employed in this study. A number of qualitative data is drawn by means of interviews to learners and teachers in 3 schools which present 3 different English levels. The qualitative data is analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively. Results show that most learners hold positive attitudes towards the new textbook Go For It. But it is not sufficient for the various learning needs of learners in the diversified areas of Chongqing. When turning to the new curriculum standard, the findings show that learners'learning needs are not fully fulfilled due to the regional diversification inherent in Chongqing and difficulties arise in the implementation of the new version of textbook. It is concluded that learner-centered curriculum asks for a school-based textbook development and the existing new version needs adaptation to meet the local needs of the subjects.
