| Teaching Chinese as a second language (TCSL) has prospered ever since the 1980s. With this trend, great progress has been made in the development of teaching materials for TCSL textbooks. Currently, the number of international students learning Chinese is much more greater than before, almost up to 40 million, with most of them learning abroad in their own countries. TCSL is developing into teaching Chinese to international students abroad with a great diversity of learning needs due to the differences in students'nations, levels and aims, which calls for due development of textbook materials. This paper conducts a comparison of needs analysis and textbook evaluation of two types of foreign students learning Chinese in China and abroad, together with a survey of 7 teachers of Chinese both at home and abroad with questions on teaching difficulties and teaching techniques. The first textbook is Chinese Course with Yang Jizhou as editor-in-chief, published by Beijing Language and Culture University Press, the second textbook is Chinese Odyssey published by Cheng & Tsui Company in Boston, U.S.A. and the third textbook is Kinesisk published by Systime Press in Danmark. This paper aims at giving some advice on how to develop Chinese textbooks with consideration of different needs of learners and how to make Chinese textbooks more popular among students to meet the challenge of teaching Chinese to international students abroad. |
