On Zhang Guruo's Translation Style Through His Translation Of Tess Of The D'Urbervilles

Translator's translation style is a new subject of translation studies. The conveyance of style is among the most sensitive and complex issues of literary translation. From the perspective of pure theory, there is no absolute and acknowledged definition for the word"style". In a broad sense, it may include the style of times, nationality and class; in a narrow one, it can be understood as the orientation towards some language phenomena, which is given by the author. The definition of style is fuzzy and delicate, while literary translation is distinctive when compared with other translation activities, both of which bring difficulties to the translator in manipulating his translation style.The traditional translation concept is centered on the style of the author's and ignores that of the translator's. Being constrained by this concept, the present researches on translator's style are mainly about whether the faithful conveyance of the original style is achieved, which they made as a criterion in judging the translated works, nevertheless, few has been studied on translator's style.In fact, the researches made on translator's translation style are significant for translator's subjective study as well as literary translation. Taking Zhang Guruo's translation of Tess of the D'Urbervilles as an example, this thesis starts from the theoretical basis of translator's style and the factors that restrict it, and makes an initial attempt to probe Zhang's style, educing that in translational practice the"cross-over point"is critical in measuring the quality of translation. The translator is supposed to operate his subjective initiative in possible space, thus making his own style salient while unifying his styles with the author's. Meanwhile, this thesis helps its readers get more acquaint with Zhang's opinions on translation and his contribution to the transmission of western culture.
