Zhang Guruo, an eminent translator, devotes his life to the research and translation of English literature. With the use of idiomatic Chinese language, he evolves a style of his own. His translated works involve novels, poems, dramas, and so on. His translation of Hardy's works achieves remarkable success and is appraised as an"expert on Hardy". The characteristic of this translator, in all his translations, is that his version is both faithful to the original and genuine and idiomatic in Chinese expression. With the booming emphasis of translators'studies in current translation world, translator's subjectivity has been focused on gradually by translation scholars at home and abroad and thus becomes one of the hot issues in the field of translation study. Under such a situation, it is necessary to make an in-depth study of Zhang's achievement in this field. The second part is the main body of the thesis, which comprises four chapters. Chapter One is a literature review of the studies on translator's subjectivity, which is given according to the development stages of translation studies and discussions on translator's subjectivity by overseas and domestic scholars. Chapter Three is a case study of the manifestation of Zhang Guruo's subjectivity in Tess. In this chapter the aesthetic features in Tess is discussed firstly. Then Zhang Guruo's subjectivity manifested in the process of representation is discussed, from the aspects of the lexical level, syntactic level, the use of four-character phrases, annotations, the translation of the rhetorical devices and artistic atmosphere and image. Thus the manifestation of translator's subjectivity, which is embodied in translator's consciousness of the TL culture and readers and his selection of translation strategies in the course of representation, is fully reflected. Chapter Four is devoted to a summary and explanation of Zhang Guruo's translation arts from the perspective of translator's subjectivity.
