Guilin is located in the southwest of Nanling Mountains and northeast of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. And it is famous for its"Landscope Number One in the World". It was named the first batch of state-level historical and cultural cities and the key national scenic area by the the State Council. Guilin was built alone Li River in Han Dynasty. Its original name was Shi'an, and commonly known as Guilin. From Tang to the Ming-Qing period, Guilin had been in constant repair, the scale had been constantly expanded, and facilities had been constantly improved. Until Ming Dynasty. As the capital of Guilin, government administration, and governance, the city is the centre of politic, economy, culture and education because of it's most prominent functions of politic and military of the provinces. And it was the most important traffic hub cities in the southwest. Guilin has a unique cultural heritage, city characteristics and deep historical accumulation.The author attempts to discuss the development of the city, the fortress patterns, the process of urban spatial structure's evolution from the perspective of history, geography of the Ming-Qing period and summaries the law the of evolution.The study of history and geography of the Guilin City can not only deepen our understanding of the process of historical development of Guilin, but also provide reference for self-construction and re-development of Guilin.The thesis is composed of four parts:The first Part analyzes selecting of the site of Guilin and the historical geography basis of the development. From the aspects of natural and human culture, it analyses and discusses environmental infrastructure and the evolution of Guilin and it gives a thorough understanding of a geographical basis of the formation and development. It points out that the choice of city's site has a historical characteristic and the times'brand and it is the best result of inter-adaptation.The second Part researches on the development of Guilin City of the Ming-Qing period. Firstly it introduces the process of development and evolutionary before the Ming-Qing period, and then it introduces construction of the Ming-Qing period of the city of Guilin, mainly the construction of Nancheng and City of Wang Jingjiang and further refinement for the construction of gate, walls, motes, and the fortress. It made the city expanded by nearly half, which brought about a series of changes in Guilin including the system of rivers and lakes. It laid the foundation for future development. The author finally analyses the reasons for its development and evolution. And changes of morphology of the fortress are always linked to its function closely. In the Ming-Qing period it was resulted from the comprehensive defense system.The third part analyzes the internal spatial structure evolution in Ming-Qing period. It firstly discusses the evolution before Ming Dynasty. Then it mainly introduces the inner structure in Ming-Qing period and its changes, which is the major content of the paper. It does research on function areas, such as administrative area, culture district, education and residential district from the aspect of evolution. It summarizes the characteristic of the evolution, that is, the ancient city construction system of china was patternize in Ming Dynasty.The fourth part researches on the changes of inner function subareas. They are research on some typical cases. It gives a deep investigation and discussion on examination hall in feudal China in Guangxi province and bazaar. Its goal is to deepen and promote the third chapter.
