The Study Of Henan Dialect In Liyang City

Henan dialect in Liyang city derives from Luoshan dialect and Guangshan dialect in Henan Province which again derives from the East Hubei dialect because of migration. With a comprehensive survey of the Henan Dialect, this thesis tends to provide a detailed description of its sound, lexis and grammar. Based on the survey, an analysis and comparison is conducted on Henan dialect, Liyang dialect and the source dialect, which is believed to helpful to further study the causes for and regular patterns of variation of Henan dialect.The thesis falls into six chapters. Chapter 1 gives a general introduction to the history and distribution of Henan dialect. Chapter 2 is the detailed description of the sound of Henan dialect with a summary of the features of its phonetic changes as well as an analysis of the phonetic changes of Henan dialect (successive tone Sandhi of a 2-character cluster, literary/colloquial reading, changed finals with -er suffixation, weak forms). In chapter 3, the classified lexis of Henan dialect is described and its lexical origin and formative features are analyzed. In chapter 4, the analysis focuses on the grammatical phenomena of Henan dialect, such as dynamic auxiliaries like"Dao"and"Lie", Ba-syntactic construction, and Yes-no questions. In chapter 5, the internal difference of Henan dialect is analyzed and an investigation is made into its dialect contact with Liyang dialect. In chapter 6, a comparison and contrast is made between Henan dialect and its source dialect.
