Equivalents in modern Chinese refer to words which have the same concept meaning and the main attached significance, the secondary attached significance has the difference in the vocabulary of modern Chinese. These words have a long history and have different development in different periods. They enrich the vocabulary of Chinese, and on the other hand they make Chinese rhetoric more vivid, accurate and expressive. Based on the work of former research, this essay involved a systematic and comprehensive research on equivalents in modern Chinese. I expressed my ideas on some disputable questions, such as the method of equivalent words'discrimination and analysis, and how to define equivalents.Equivalents are not absolutely equal, and its existence is valuable. Equivalents was formed because of the following factors, such as indication, dialect, exotic word, the evolution of word meaning, the simultaneous use of new words and old words, words of the same morpheme and formation of reverted order, the simultaneous use of scientific words and daily words and words of double syllable. Rests on the secondary attached significance the difference, the classification and discrimination of equivalents in modern Chinese were discussed from the aspects of semantics, structure and function. Equivalents have the cognitive value, the cultural value and the language-using value. However, the standardization is the need of social language community, so we must standardize equivalents. This essay analyzed equivalents completely and deeply. The creative points are:(1) Defining equivalents comprehensively;(2) Classifying equivalents from different aspects to find the difference.
