This thesis gives an overview of the agreements and disagreements proposed by the Chinese and Western scholars on both domestication and foreignization strategies at the beginning of the definitions of language, culture and translation as well as their mutual relationships, the author systematically interprets Venuti's foreignization strategy and its explanation scopes and limitations, simply makes some reviews and comments on some issues proposed by Chinese scholars in literary translation and puts forward that the literary translation should reproduce its images and cultural connotation as much as possible. In 1813 German distinguished thinker, philosopher and scholar Friedrich Schleiermacher put forward two approaches to dealing with these cultural differences in both language and culture for the first time, which means that "There are only two methods of translating, either the translator does not bother the original author and leads the reader to approach the author or the translator tries not to bother the reader and leads the original author to approach the reader." (Schulte & Biguenet, 1992:42) U.S. translation theorist Lawrence Venuti clearly named both approaches above foreignization and domestication respectively. Since the 1980s, the translation study has been shifted into the culture field. Generally speaking, there are two translation strategies in the process of across-cultural transmission, which are named domestication and foreignization. Domestication removes the original flavor, by which the target language readers are not able to understand alien cultures. Foreignization preserves the original flavor, by which it can be realized to promote exchanges between different cultures. Foreignization can really and faithfully fulfill the fundamental task and purpose of translation, which is also a fundamental strategy to successfully realize the across-cultural transmission.By demonstrating and analyzing the examples quoted from English version of Fu Zao from many perspectives, the author tries his best to make an extensive and profound study that foreignization can make lots of contributions to transmitting source language culture, preserving the alien culture features, promoting cultural communication, enriching the target language culture and meeting the expectation of target language readers, and clearly points out the importance, necessity and feasibility of foreignization strategy adopted by the translators in transmitting an alien culture to the target language readers. In the 21st century of cultural globalization, the people's communication with different cultural backgrounds and tongues has become more and more frequent. In essence, the people's communication with different languages is the one with different cultures. As a bridge between different cultures and languages in communication, translation plays a fairly important role in the process of across-cultural transmission, and foreignization is a certainly fundamental strategy to realize across-cultural transmission, so people completely and fully have causes to believe that foreignization has been a trend and will be able to make more achievements in the future in the process of across-cultural transmission. Finally, the thesis points out the author's expected predication purpose by foreignization strategy, the limitations of foreignization translation and his further studies in this field.
