Debussy is one of the representatives of impressionist music in France from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century.There are about one hundred compositions created by him during more than thirty years.As a revolutionary of music,Debussy started from the end of romanticism in 19th century,and knock on the door of the new century.Based on the music tradition of France,and draw the materials from styles of his surroundings,he has created a high originality musical language.His music has branded many later musicians and been a bridge of the 19th and the 20th century,then has given significant effect on the music of the 20th century.Among the many different styles of compositions,Debussy's piano music is a distinctive one,especially from 1903 to 1913,about all of his so called impressionistic compositions have welled up.The two volumes piano compositions 'Prelude',which published in 1910 and 1913 respectively,are called very mellow compositions in his creations.The second volume of 'Prelude' is more abstract and more complex than the first volume.To simplify the analysis,we choose the second volume of 'Prelude' as the composition studied in this thesis.The thesis is organized as follows:Chapter 1 introduces the Debussy's life and his creation of piano composition and the piano 'Prelude' also has been briefly introduced.Chapter 2 analyzes the musical structure and the musical materials of the Debussy's piano 'Prelude'.The characteristics of musical elements in this composition also have been described in this chapter.Chapter 3 classifies the natural phenomena,landscape and screen of characters in the first volume of the Debussy's piano 'Prelude'.Finally,the impression of Debussy's impressionist music has been concluded by summarize the musical characteristics in the composition.
