With the development of economy, pursuiting emotional experience has gradually become the main theme of life, instead of pursuiting materialistic goals.Physical environment is composed of a wide rage of products, which can create emotional ties with people.Decoration contains lots of sensible elements , which convey cultural significance of products by external and aesthetic form.So decoration is an important part of product design.The thesis introduces the origin, history and features of decorative symbol from the perspective of Semeiology, and makes a deep analysis of cognition and expression of decorative symbol in product design.Firstly, the thesis presents the theories of semeiology and summarizes the feature of decorative symbol, which is the form of decorative symbol conveying independent and aesthetic meanings.The paper also introduces the evolution and function of decorative symbol.Secondly, the paper analyzes the expression of aesthetic meanings of decorative symbol and connotation of decorative symbol. Then the author discusses different styles of product decoration according to the characteristics of visual perception. The paper also probes into the cognition of decorative symbol's connotation, which is an active course of construction, based on cognition structure of subject.Lastly, on the basis of study, the thesis puts forward a creative viewpoint on product decoration which is the attributes of product decoration according to cognition, and conceives four different procedures.Then the author applies them to practice in order to verify the feasibility and validity of the methods.
