Since the mid-1980s, fruitful research results on language learning strategies have achieved. But few of them is on vocational students. So, it seems necessary and urgent to take a survey related with the vocational students.Here, the present study is to be carried out t, aiming at the following questions:1. Which category of English learning strategies and with what frequency do Chinese vocational freshmen employ during their English study?2. Is there any relationship between English learning strategies application and their English proficiencies? If there is, what is it?3. Is English learning strategy training effective in enhancing the English achievements of the vocational students?A questionnaire and Examination papers of PRETCO were used as tools. Sixty students are selected as subjects, and SPSS 13.0 is employed to analyze the gotten data. Descriptive statistics are computed to summarize the students' responses to strategy items. Correlations analysis is conducted to examine the relationship between the strategy use of vocational college students and their English achievement.Multiple regression analysis is used to determine the predictive power of language learning strategies for English achievements.The study revealed the following results, Firstly, the frequency of overall strategy use of vocational college freshmen is not high. Secondly, the use frequency of each learning strategy are separately different. Thirdly, the English learning strategy application competence can be improved by English learning strategy training. Fourthly, all of the four learning strategies are with the positive significance correlations between the English achievement. Fifthly, the cognitive strategies and meta-cognitive strategies can predict 19.5% variance of English achievements.The result of this study will have meaningful implications for both vocational college English teachers and learners. But there are still some limitations.
