Since the grammarians began to study the auxiliary verb, the discussing of the auxiliary verb never ceased. However, in a long period of time ,there are different view about it's name,range,grammar function,the standards,classification and so on. At present, the study of the auxiliary verbs in the modern Chinese and ancient Chinese is full,but the study of the auxiliary verbs in medieval has become relatively weak. what's more, the study of the auxiliary verbs in medieval Chinese,where has a great number of Chinese translations about Buddhist scriptures is even more weak. Based on this, this paper chose an important period of Southern dynasty "Mahisasakavinaya" as a corpus, in the hope of the overall study of the auxiliary verbs in medieval Chinese can play a little role.This paper is divided into four parts. At first,we give a brief introduction of Mahisasakavinaya and the auxiliary verbs. Secondly, we analysis specifically the auxiliary verbs in Mahisasakavinaya. There are 19 monosyllabic auxiliary verbs and 4 disyllable auxiliary verbs in Mahisasakavinaya in which is divided into four Categories: the auxiliary verbs for possibility, the auxiliary verbs for wish, the auxiliary verbs to ought to and the auxiliary verbs for passive. We observe and study the pragmatic, semantic and syntactic of every monosyllabic auxiliary verb in usage, putting great emphasis on the type of syntactical structure in which every monosyllabic auxiliary verb appears.Thirdly, we analyze statistically the usage and conjunction of the disyllable auxiliary verbs in Mahisasakavinaya. Fourthly, we compare the usage of the auxiliary verbs in Mahisasakavinaya with those in previous books.nd finally we make a conclusion.
