The purpose of the thesis is to provide teachers with a practical introduction to design and development of CALL (Computer--Assisted Language Learning). Although the idea of applying CALL as a medium of teaching is not a complete new one in the general educational field, it is relatively recent arrival on the language teaching scene, and there remains some confusion about CALL in English language teaching. The central question here is: should CALL be seen as part of syllabus design or of methodology?In this thesis, the writer will argue that, with the development of technology and economy, the medium of teaching has fallen behind the times. It can not meet the needs of the present situations. CALL is hoped to be some assistance in teaching and to be help in teachers' developing, selecting and adapting tasks.The research of CALL is a hot topic in the developed countries. In the past years, some specialists have made a thorough research on its theory and practical usage. In our country, CALL has not been used widely. Much work should be done to improve the theory and practice in CALL.The definition of CALL, in brief, is to use computers in teaching through its multimedia, word processing system, and the Internet.The major purpose of the thesis is to provide teachers with a framework for analyzing CALL which will help them select, adapt or create their own CALL. The thesis will discuss the following questions in detail:1. principles and ways of CALL2. CALL'S effect in teaching3. learning language through CALL, and4. the barriers of CALLThrough the research, we can get the following conclusion:1. CALL should fit the teaching content.2. Learners' factors can effect CALL3. Call can help students grasp English better.
