The problem of rural-urban differences is both old and realistic in China, which affects its modernization drive to some extent. The experience ever since 1980s indicates that education plays an increasingly important role in the process of social stratification. The great urban-rural differences in physical education in China are not only an important aspect of urban-rural differences in education but also an important aspect of urban-rural differences in physical education. Cultural reproduction in physical education is the more covert cultural factor that causes the duality structure of physical culture between urban and rural areas in china. Many western Conflict Theory researchers, with Pierre Bourdieu the most outstanding representative, illustrate inequality with the theory of cultural reproduction. This paper employs the theory of cultural reproduction to study the urban and rural differences in physical education in China through analyzing documents and questionnaires. This paper consists of five chapters: in chapter â… , the literature review, Pierre Bourdieu's theory of cultural reproduction is introduced and this paper's topic is put forward; in chapter â…¡, the starting point of discussion, the background of the differences of physical culture as well as the differences of physical cultural capital in Chinese urban and rural areas; in chapter â…¢, the focus of this paper, cultural reproduction phenomenon in scholastic physical education is discussed; in chapter â…£,the result of cultural reproduction, social reproduction is demonstrated; in chapter â…¤,conclusion is made, which holds that viewed for the perspective of urban-rural differences in physical education, cultural reproduction to some degree exists in Chinese physical education, which results in the rural children either being washed out by physical education or returning to countryside without any access to physical institutes and, in the end, in two closed circles: a superior cultural circle in urban areas and an inferior cultural circle in rural areas.
