The English language is characterized by its abundant and colorful synonyms, and therefore synonyms teaching is one of the important and unavoidable tasks of English vocabulary teaching in schools. In order to achieve a fruitful result of the synonyms teaching in senior middle schools, we teachers should pay attention to the following two questions: one is to have a thorough and comprehensive understanding of English synonyms, and the other is to have some sound and useful teaching principles and methods in the classroom teaching of English synonyms.With the first question, a detailed classification is made of synonyms, and a tentative definition is offered to each kind of the synonyms in the light of the semantic theories of "word meaning " and "componential analysis". Synonyms are semantically classified into complete synonyms, partial synonyms and pseudo-synonyms. In addition, for discriminatingsynonyms, four specific methods (1. comparison and contrast of semantic components; 2. selective or collocative comparison and contrast; 3. stylistic comparison and contrast; 4. evaluative comparison and contrast) are proposed onthe basis of the semantic theory and in the light of the different levels of synonyms' usage.With the second question, in accordance with "Social...
