Comparative Analysis Of Words In Chinese Characters In Korean And Those In Chinese

China and South Korea, as two close neighbors, share a lot of political, economical, social and cultural aspects. Chinese characters have been longly and widely used all over South Korea, ever since they were introduced form China. This language has such a huge impact on South Korean that half words of the latter are derived from the former. It is a fact that Chinese characters are used by both Chinese and South Koreans, but if we compare the corresponding South Korean Chinese characters with modern Chinese characters, we will observe not only perceivable similarities but also differences.This dissertation, basing on the methodology of descriptive linguistics, will first figure out the characteristics of South Korean Chinese characters and reveal the historical Chinese descent which has been deeply influencing South Korean. Secondly, it will set the Chinese words in "Daily Chinese", one of the most popular textbook of Chinese-teaching for middle school students in Korea, as typical linguistic samples in order to introduce contrastive analysis methods to explore the parallelism and derivations between Chinese and South Korean words. Whether a South Korean Chinese word and its Chinese counterpart share some common traits, in the dimensions of morphology and lexical meaning, will be considered as a major criterion for further categorization. Accordingly, our linguistic samples can further be divided into five groups:homographic synonyms, homographic quasi-synonyms, heteronyms, paronymic synonyms and heterographic synonyms. Thirdly, this dissertation will unveil the potential reasons for the emergence of the cross-culture differences, which may be beneficial to reduce errors and improve efficiency in Chinese learning.This thesis consists of six parts. Chapter 1 is an introduction. It describes our researching scope, reviews current research studies, emphasis the significance and then explicates our researching methods. Chapter 2 reviews modern Chinese history, outlines historical features of Korean Chinese characters, explores the source and characteristics. In chapter 3, a comparative analysis was carried out between corresponding characters of Korean Chinese and modern Chinese in order to differentiate the 120 pairs of syllables of Chinese characters from "Daily Chinese". Chapter 4 explores the reasons of the cross-culture differences in morphology and lexical meaning. And chapter 5, taking the comparison of vocabulary as an example, analyses the errors encountered by the Chinese learners of South Korean. Then present learning method that decrease misunderstanding. Finally, chapter 6 and sorts out our analysis results and makes conclusions. This research tries to help the South Korean learners who use the "Daily Chinese" as the textbook can easily understand and better use Chinese.
