Every year, at the beginning of the first term, the senior-middle-school students and teachers have to overcome a gap between the junior and senior middle schools. The contents of the gap contains teaching methodology and materials, learning skills, learning interest, communication between teachers and students, means of assessment and so on. And whether the students adapt themselves to English study at this period of time will have a great effect on their self-confidence when they go a step further in learning English. Recently many researchers research on the gap between junior and senior middle schools, but most of them only draw their attention to English knowledge instead of English learning strategies. However, in 2000, the English Course Standard Teaching and Research Group Under the Ministry of Education published the new English Course Standard for the Basic Education Stage in China. It says learning strategies (including cognitive strategy, managing and evaluating strategy, communicative learning strategies, and resource strategy) are the guarantee of improving study efficiency and developing self-learning abilities. It also says learning strategies are so flexible that they need to be changed according to different learners, different periods of time and different subjects. So as a Chinese English teacher, he/she should have the awareness of helping the students to form individual English learning strategies and improve their competence of adjusting English learning strategies.
