Currently, studies related to non-volunteer are lack. With empirical study method and selecting college students as samples, the purpose of this article is to seek the non-volunteers' rationalization mechanism for their non-participation in voluntary service and to identify factors which influence that mechanism.According to materials from interviews and documents, the author designs a questionnaire about the situation of non-volunteers in college. Then, applying SPSS15.0 to analyze the questionnaire data, we find that there are three kinds of mechanisms. One is"instrumental rationalization mechanism"which includes three paths:"no effect","inefficiency", and"uncontrollability". Two is"value rationalization mechanism"which consists of"no value","irresponsibility", and"stigmatization". Three is"emotional rationalization mechanism"including two path: the first path based on existed or probably negative emotion and the second one based on probably negative interpersonal relationship. Among all these reasons, the most important one is"time", not only lack of time, but also uncontrollability of time. The result from chi-square test and multiple linear regression analysis shows that"contact degree of voluntary service"and"within or without a romantic or marriage relationship"are the two most important factors that influence non-volunteers'rationalization mechanism for their non-participation in voluntary service.
